What does migration do to your mind?

Migration is changing the world.

In 2017, almost 258 million people are international migrants, according to UN Population Division estimates, meaning 3.4 percent of the world’s population are living in a country other than their country of birth. Regarding the destinations, two-thirds of the international migrated to just twenty countries worldwide, while half of them remain in just ten countries. Roughly 74 percent of all international migrants were of working age. Relative to world population size, more people were migrating around the end of the 19th Century than they are now.

Concerning Nepal, the number of migrants leaving the country for work is increasing every year. In 2014 more than 520,000 labor permits were issued to Nepalis planning to work abroad. Summarizing the total migrant population in Nepal, three quarters are leaving the country. This means there are more emigrants in Nepal than immigrants.

Regardless of the country, migration is influenced by a combination of economic, environmental, political and social factors. Internal migration might be used to solve specific labor market shortages.
